How I work

What is therapy like?

Our sessions are led by what matters to you. We might explore what’s happening in your life right now, experiences from your past, patterns in your relationships, or what’s happening between us in the room.

Here are some of the key ways therapy with me works. It isn’t an exhaustive list, but these are the things I think you’ll find most valuable.

I pay close attention to your inner world

Experiencing real attention, care and commitment can help you start to feel valued. Over time, you may begin to value your own experience and pay attention to it yourself, building a stronger sense of self-worth.

From this starting point, we can look at your story.

I help you understand the meaning you’ve given to the past

What happened to you matters, and so does the meaning you took from it. Understanding that meaning can help you reevaluate it, and feel more compassion for your past self. With awareness comes choice, and the chance to change.

And once we understand where you’re coming from, we can look at the lens you see things through.

I help you notice what might feel like “just how it is”

We are so intimately familiar with our own worlds, it can just seem like ‘how it is’. By entering your world as an outsider seeking to understand, relate and ultimately get as close as I can to experiencing how it is to be you – I might be able to help you see yourself more clearly.

Seeing that more clearly sometimes means gently questioning it.

I might sometimes challenge you

This is never about catching you out or proving you wrong. It’s about gently pointing out things you may not be aware of. Things that influence how you see yourself and your relationships, or hold you back from what you want. I don’t think there are “right” or “wrong” ways to see the world, but being locked into one perspective can become limiting.

A lot of this shows up in the room itself.

I work with the relationship between us

What happens between us often echoes how you relate to people outside the therapy room. Because you are the focus of the therapy, I can notice those patterns without the usual pressures of ‘being liked’ or ‘keeping the peace’. We can use this to understand how you might be in relationships outside the therapy room, and what you might want to shift.

What to expect

Sessions with me are 50 minutes long, and can be either weekly or fortnightly. I work in person in Sheffield City Centre, or online on Whereby.

If you’re curious about whether we might work well together, you’re welcome to get in touch or find out more about starting therapy.
